Isle of Man Journal - July '07

Wed Mar 19, 2008, 6:08 AM
This is the entry I wrote on live journal after I got back from DofE on the Isle of Man. It doesn't really need much of an introduction.

"Here goes, I've promised Becca I'd do an LJ on the DofE expedition that we suffered through for no less than FOUR days.

For me DofE started when it CONSUMED MY BIRTHDAY on Wednesday night. I went out for an italian meal with mum, dad, robert and matthew and then came back at half ten to pack my rucksack :(

The ferry journey was fine and I don't get sea sick at all but when we arrived at the camp site later on i got really really ill and my stomach was killing me. I went to tell the leaders I was ill and Andy said I could sleep inside in a bed instead of in the tent. XDDD It was almost worth throwing up four times. The first two times I threw up were outside and in the morning some girl came up to me to ask if I was alright and said "you eat a lot of mushrooms don't you?" I WAS MORTIFIED. THERE WERE WHOLE MUSHROOMS IN MY SICK. Luckily I felt alright to walk in the morning after my amazing sleep in a bed.

The first day of walking was ridiculously long. 23km and it was tipping it down the whole entire time. We thought it was only 20km that day so after the first 3km we were like "yeahh! only 17k to go!!". Sadly Dave the Mountain Goat came along and told us we actually had 20km to go. :(

The camp site on the second night wasn't up to much as the only thing it has going for it was a saw which anyone could have picked up and murdered us with in the night. There was no hot water and the toilet and shower was in the dark. Whenever we arrived at camp our tents put themselves up by magic thanks to johnny XDD We never actually asked him to do our tents, he just automatically presumed that we were too lazy to do it ourselves XDDDDD

Now I have to dedicate a paragraph to the pain that me and Becca suffered on our feet. The Isle of Man has damaged our feet so much that Becca left two toenails on Snaefell and I left half the skin from my little toe on a campsite. WALKING ABSOLUTELY KILLED but at least we had a decent excuse to be a mile behind everyone else instead of just being slow XDDD

Becca: This is a long road
Me: A long painful road
Becca: Let's rest then
Me: Ok.

I think I only walked for the rests. Taking off a two stone rucksack is like being born again XDD

Usually on DofE we mess about in the tent but on this one we were so shattered after walking that we actually slept :O One night we all fell asleep at 11ish and I woke up at quarter to one and started talking to myself and then told Sarah (who was asleep) that it was late and we should go to sleep. And apparently I snored one night (WHICH I HAVE NEVER DONE IN MY LIFE) and when Sarah woke me up to tell me to shut up I started talking nonsense, adamently telling her that she had to get the red one (???)

I also need to write a paragraph about the amazing Snaefell tram!! Technically we were supposed to walk and we had to pretend to the assessor that we struggled up to the top of the 2036 ft hill on foot but we were broken souls by the time we'd climbed three quarters of it so we sacked it off and got on the tram XDDDD Best decision EVER. It was very rickety and seemed like the tram version of us trying to climb a big hill but it was the best tram I have ever been on and I will treasure the memory of it forever. It only saved us 500m more walking so it wasn't really cheating, whatever certain other people think.

The last day was nearly as good as the tram, if not better. We were on the road that actually never ends so to kill the monotony we sung the WHOLE WAY much to the annoyance of Sarah. However, these were no ordinary songs as they were all specially adapted to the theme of DofE pain and suffering XDDD One of the best was 'Walking and the Pain' to the tune of Beauty and the Beast and The Road that Never Ends.

Me and Becca : (for four hours) This is the road that never ends. It just goes on and on my friend. Some people, started walking it not knowing what it was, and then continued walking it forever just because this is the road that never ends.......

I am surprised Sarah or Johnny didn't bottle us. Maybe that was why they walking so fast XDDDD"

Et voilà.
Becca, put yours up too =D

fear of long words
:iconmaiiahee:
what is the longets word??

It might be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (which appears in the Oxford English Dictionary), unless you want to count names of diseases (such as 'pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanocon iosis', defined by the OED as "a factitious word alleged to mean 'a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust' but occurring chiefly as an instance of a very long word"), places (such as 'Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwlll lantysiliogogogoch', a village in Wales), chemical compounds (apparently there is one that is 1,913 letters long), and also a few words found only in Joyce's Finnegans Wake.

Other words famous for being sesquipedalian:

antidisestablishmentarianism ("opposition to the disestablishment of the Church of England")
floccinaucinihilipilification
honorificabilitudinitatibus (Which appears in Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost, and which has been cited as [dubious] evidence that Francis Bacon wrote Shakespeare's plays)
Or perhaps smiles is the longest word — after all, there is a mile between the first letter and the last.
